Met level activity chart
Exercise experts measure activity in metabolic equivalents, or METs. One MET is defined as the energy it takes to sit quietly. One MET is defined as the energy it takes to sit quietly. For the average adult, this is about one calorie per every 2.2 pounds of body weight per hour; someone who weighs 160 pounds would burn approximately 70 calories an hour while sitting or sleeping. The MET level is higher as the intensity of your activity increases. For example, 2.5 METs is the amount of energy used each minute to walk leisurely, but that goes up to 5 METs when walking very briskly at 4 mph. You are burning 5 times as many calories per minute when walking briskly as when sitting quietly. Researchers used a measure called metabolic equivalents, or METs, to assess physical activity levels. Women who reported 21 MET hours per week—equivalent to about seven hours per week of brisk walking—were half as likely to develop colon cancer as those who got only two MET hours per week (equivalent to walking slowly for one hour per week). The chart below lists the number of METs used per hour during various types of physical activities. Metabolic Equivalent (MET) Activity Chart. STUDY. Flashcards. Learn. Write. Spell. Test. PLAY. Recreational activities at 4 - 5 MET level may promote endurance, however, occupational activities at this MET level in For each person, the range for total daily energy expenditure is highly variable, it depends on many factors, including: activity level, age, gender, size, weight and body composition. One of the easiest methods for recording of the intensity of a physical activity is the Metabolic Equivalent Task (MET) method. Average MET Values for Activities with Fitness Components (Activity intensities are 3 METs and higher.) Ask your client to pick a favorite physical activity or mode of exercise and plug the MET value into the formula below to see how many calories they burn per minute and whether or not hey should increase the level of intensity or duration to help achieve a specific goal like weight loss:
